About Me

Hello and welcome to Curls in the Classroom!

I'm Emily and this is my little slice of the net :)

I’m a 28 year old Australian teacher, teaching at a school on the beautiful northern beaches of Sydney. I was lucky to get a full time job at such a wonderful school straight out of uni, and over the past six years I’ve taught Year 1 for two years and Kindergarten for three. My biggest challenge was the Year 1/2 composite class in 2016, which I will be teaching again this year.

Before I was teaching I taught dance at a local studio (tiny-tot classes, nothing too technical). I absolutely love to dance. I’ve coordinated at least one dance group since I began teaching. Two years ago I was called up to the 'big leagues' - choreographing one of the three groups my school submits to the Sydney North Dance Festival. I worked with some gorgeous little dancers (I coordinate the Year 2 group), and each group's hard work was rewarded with an invitation to perform at the NSW State Festival. My 2015 group performed to Supercali.... from the Mary Poppins musical, and the 2016 group performed "One Short Day", an item about the Emerald City using the song from Wicked, my ALL TIME FAVOURITE musical.

2015 Supercali Kids performed 'That Special Word'

2016 Emerald Citizens performed 'One Short Day'

When I’m not teaching, I love to unwind with a good book. I had to ban myself from reading for pleasure during school terms - because I get so caught up in the story. I can read for hours, to the point where it borders on obsessive and I HAVE TO KNOW how it all ends. This always ends in late nights, puffy eyes and grumpiness so I only allow myself to read in the holidays.

I love the beach. I grew up in the northern suburbs of Sydney but the beaches were only a car-ride away. Once I started teaching and became financially independent I moved to the beaches to be closer to work. It is the most magical place to live.

So there you have it. I’m a teaching/beaching/dancing bookworm that truly loves her job. Thank you for visiting, I hope to see you again soon!
